#9-1 Mcdonald's Targets Starbucks

McDonald's, the fast-food company, is heating up competition with the Starbucks Coffee Company. McDonalds's plans to put coffee bars in its fourteen thousand restaurants in the United States. Fewer than a thousand now offer specialty coffee drinks like lattes and cappuccinos.

Just like Starbucks, each coffee bar would have its own barista, the person who makes and serves the drinks. Company documents reported by the Wall Street Journal said the plan would add one billion dollars a year in sales.

Mammoth body brought to Japan
3万7000年前の凍結マンモスが日本で一般公開

The frozen body of a 37,000-year-old mammoth was brought to Japan for tests Dec. 29. The 1.2-meter body will hopefully help scientists learn more about the organs and the internal structure of mammoths. The body was discovered by a reindeer herder in northern Siberia. The trunk and the eyes are intact, although its tail and ear had been bitten off. It is the best-preserved frozen mammoth ever discovered.

シベリアでほぼ無傷の状態で見つかった3万7000年前の凍結マンモスが、12月29日CT検査などの研究のため「来日」し、1月2日から一般公開されている。

BMW to cut thousands of jobs
来年に数千人規模の人員整理、８千人か

BMW plans to cut thousands of jobs in 2008 to cut costs, the German automaker said on Friday.The German automaker says temporary workers are most likely to be affected. Mathias Schmidt, a spokesman at the Munich-based company, did not say exactly how many thousands of jobs would be cut. The Der Spiegel news magazine Web site put the figure at 8,000.

ドイツ自動車大手、ＢＭＷは２１日、来年中に数千人規模の人員削減を実施すると発表した。人員整理の大半はドイツ内の施設で行う。詳しい人数には触れなかったが、地元のシュピーゲル誌は約８０００人と報じた。 原油高や欧州単一通貨ユーロ高などを背景にしたコスト切り詰め、収益改善策の一環で、削減の対象の大半は派遣労働者になるとみられる。同社の従業員総数は約１０万８千人で、ドイツでは約８万人。

原油高騰の影響が自動車産業にも影響してきたか。。日本では、灯油が値上がり、北国の人達が薪ストーブに切り替えたりと連日、ニュースに取り上げられています。原油高騰とは関係ないが、私の会社でも、IT費用削減で来年の3月に大幅な人権費カットが見込まれています。BMWと同じで"temporary workers"の人達が影響を受けます。私もカットのリスト対象に入っている可能性があるので、来年の3月が非常に怖いです。。。。

レーシック手術。この名前を聞いたことがある人もいるかも知れませんが、角膜の形状にレーザーで変化を加えて、焦点が網膜で結合するように屈折率を調整し、視力を回復する方法です。この手術の検査を年末に受ける予定です。ただ私の目は、常に充血、ものもらいになりやすい、ずっとコンタクトなどの不安材料がたくさん。まずは検査に通過できるかどうかです。今は、一週間前からソフトコンタクト禁止なので、メガネ生活ですが、裸眼で生活できる日を楽しみにしています。
